What is World Autism Day?

Celebrated every year on April 2nd, this day is recognized and raises awareness about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Since the creation of this internationally recognized day in 2008, a theme is selected each year by the United Nations. In 2019, the theme is “Assistive Technologies, Active Participation” and focuses on the great impact that assistive devices can provide to those with ASD.

Approximately 2% of the population is believed to have ASD, but autism is a spectrum disorder. This means it can range in severity and symptoms. Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects language, behaviors, and social interactions. It is often diagnosed in childhood but can take many different shapes.

Using medical marijuana for autism has been a recent trend, as medical marijuana has gained acceptance nationwide. Patients report multiple reasons for the switch, but one of the most common reasons why is for marijuana’s anti-epileptic effects. For those with ASD, roughly one-fifth to as many as one-third have epilepsy co-morbidly. CBD can help alleviate some of these symptoms. Even those without epilepsy have reported benefits from CBD, in helping with anxiety, muscle spasms, and tics. Patients also reported some benefits to THC for analgesic and anti-insomnia properties and THCV for appetite suppression.

This month, Keystone Shops is supporting the Eagles Autism Challenge! This event raised funds and awareness for those with ASD and supports Autism research. You can donate to our team here: https://fundraisers.hakuapp.com/teams/keystone-shops
