Melanoma Monday

Founded by the American Academy of Dermatology in 1984, Melanoma Monday falls on the first Monday of May each year. It is set aside as a day to raise national awareness about Melanoma, one of the most aggressive forms of skin cancer. Melanomas, which are mole-like tumors of melanin-forming cells, can develop on the skin, eyes, nose, mouth, and underneath nails. Those with fair skin and high-exposure levels to UV, such as sunburns, are at a higher risk of developing a melanoma.

There are important steps one can do to protect skin health, such as practicing sun safety techniques. This includes tanning prevention, active and repeated application of sunscreen, and regular skin examinations at home. Irregular sized moles or moles that grow in size are both indications that one should consult a dermatologist . Early detection of melanoma and other types of skin cancers directly correlates with higher recovery rates.
