Terpinolene is a terpene known for its complex aroma. Rather than having a distinct scent, it is made up of multiple herbaceous scents that come across as piney, floral, pungent, and occasionally sweet or citrus-like. Due to its fresh and pleasant smell, it can often be found in soaps and perfumes. It can be found in nature in plants such as nutmeg, conifers, apples, cumin, and lilacs. Among naturally occurring terpenes in cannabis, this one tends to be least common. Medically, terpinolene is an antioxidant, antibacterial, and anti-fungal. Terpinolene is also used for its digestive aid and anti-tumor properties. The inhaled effects of this terpene tend to increase sedation and cause a relaxing sensation.

In general, terpinolene is most present in sativa strains, although does not appear to be passed down genetically in all cases. This is best seen in the strain Sour Tangie, which has high concentrations of terpinolene. The parent strain, Tangie, does not typically have high terpinolene concentrations.
