As November marks our approach to the holiday season, many families across the country prepare for the next big holiday, Thanksgiving. In this time of uncertainty because of the ongoing pandemic, many of us are wondering about the complicated details of making a Thanksgiving meal with our families work. However, with the economic hardships so many have had to face since the beginning of the pandemic (and even well before then), the idea of making sure food is on the table can be challenging in and of itself. That’s why this month, Keystone Shops is excited to be featuring Share Food Program as our November Keystone Kares!
Share Food Program is a food warehouse and distributor of mass amounts of food throughout the Greater Philadelphia Area. They are the largest provider of food to citizens in the Philadelphia region, distributing food to over 700,000 homes in need each month, many of whom being families with children or seniors. The number of those in need has increased since the beginning of the pandemic.
Before the pandemic, 24.5% of Philadelphians were already living in poverty, and 18.3% of Philadelphians were food insecure. These numbers have only increased since the pandemic began, but the Share Food Program has expanded and heightened their activity to meet the needs of the community. Since the COVID-19 outbreak hit the U.S., they have been able to donate 4 million pounds of food each month, while being fully operational 7 days a week. They distribute through home deliveries as well as through a multitude of food banks and pantries throughout the Philadelphia area, including Montgomery County.
All month long, Keystone Shops will be accepting monetary and food donations, as well as running a staff food drive for Share Food Program, and we encourage our patients to donate if they are able. We will also be highlighting products with proceeds going directly to Share Food Program. If you are interested in learning more about Share Food Program, you can visit their website www.sharefoodprogram.org or if you would like to donate to them directly, you can do so here.
